Samsung's new Galaxy S6 edge+ comes with a big 5.7" curved display


Earlier this year, Samsung announced the Galaxy S6 and boy was it a crowd pleaser. Not only did it impress the general crowd, Samsung's pair of flagship android devices managed to win the hearts of many reviewers. During today's special Unpacked event, Samsung not only announced the successor to their popular Galaxy Note lineup but they also unveiled somewhat of a Galaxy Note Edge successor.

Called the Galaxy S6 edge+, as the name suggests, this new device is a "plus" of the original Galaxy S6 edge which came with a 5.1" curved display on both sides. Just think of the Galaxy S6 edge+ as a bigger and more advanced Galaxy S6 edge. Sure it has a bigger 5.7" QHD AMOLED display but Samsung didn't only just increased the size of the display, they improved the original device in terms of the hardware and also the added software features.


In terms of design, Samsung has kept everything similar to the regular S6 edge and from a distant, the new S6 edge+ looks just like a bigger S6 edge. This also means that the S6 edge+ comes with a glass back with a subtly curved metal frame to reinforce the device. Don't worry too much about the durability of the Galaxy S6 edge+ as it comes with Corning's Gorilla Glass 4

Just like the Galaxy Note 5, the new S6 Edge+ will come with Samsung's new Exynos processor which is paired up with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM. Also identical is the 5.7" 1440 x 2560 AMOLED display but the one present here is curved on both sides. Beyond that, the device also comes with 32/64GB of non-expandable memory, a 16MP rear camera, a 5MP front facing camera and a decently sized 3,000 mAh battery.

But specs aside, the Galaxy S6 edge+ isn't all about the hardware performance, similar to the Galaxy S6 edge and outgoing Galaxy Note edge, this new curved screened phablet from Samsung is all about the software enhancements. Similar to on the Galaxy Note 5, the Galaxy S6 edge+ also come with a new livestreaming application and specific to the S6 edge+ is a brand new App edge launcher which enables users to customize applications and contacts for quick launching.

Besides all the hardware and software enhancements, Samsung is also getting ready quite a number of accessories which are uniquely different. Sure there will be the usual plethora of cases but Samsung is also readying a keyboard cover, yes you heard me right. The Galaxy S6 edge+ will feature an optional physical qwerty keyboard case.

Overall, the Galaxy S6 edge+ looks like a pretty solid device and while it does not come with an S Pen, this should make choosing between the Note 5 and S6 edge+ a little easier as both devices are targeted at a slightly different cloud. Samsung will start offering the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ in Malaysia in early September but there's no word on pricing yet.

Samsung Galaxy Note5 announced, say goodbye to plastic

Samsung's new flagship phablet is finally official and after months and weeks of countless reports/leaks, we can now genuinely know what Samsung has in store with their new flagship device. Following up the numbering game, this year we're presented with the Galaxy Note 5 which is arguably the most refined Galaxy device Samsung has ever released.

Being announced earlier than it's usual IFA unveiling, the Galaxy Note 5 comes with a bold new design that has been somewhat borrowed from the Galaxy S6 announced earlier this year. No longer is Samsung trying to fake an aluminum frame nor are they trying to trick our eyes (and hands) with faux leather, they've finally learnt their lesson and the result is the Galaxy Note 5 is built with a solid metal frame and glass which is flat on the front and contoured on the back.

The industrial design being showcased on the Note 5 looks a lot like what's implemented on the Galaxy S6 but that's actually a good thing. But Samsung didn't merely enlarge the Galaxy S6, they've also added some extra curves all around to make it feel better in the hand. While Samsung did not configure the Note 5 with a microSD card slot, the trusty S Pen silo is still on the bottom right of the device.
On the hardware side of things, the QHD 5.7" display from the outgoing Galaxy Note 4 is still present in the Galaxy Note 5 and just like on the Galaxy S6, Samsung has opted to go with their own Exynos processor to power their new flagship device. Besides the new processor, the Note 5 also comes with 4GB of RAM, 32/64GB of non-expandable memory, the same 16MP camera from the Galaxy S6 paired with a dual LED flash, a 5MP front facing camera and a noticeably smaller 3,000mAh battery that is non-removable but support Qualcomm's Quick Charge 2.0 and also wireless charging.

Besides redesigning the Galaxy Note 5, Samsung also modified the S Pen and it's now that much stronger and they claim that the precision of the S Pen is now similar to that of a ball pen. In the software side of things, the usual claim of software enhancements like drawing on the screen and writing out text is still present in the Galaxy Note 5. Interestingly, the S Pen also clicks out through a spring loaded mechanism rather than using your fingers to pry on pen.

The Galaxy Note 5 will begin shipping on August 21 in the US and other markets will follow on. Malaysia will be getting the dual SIM Galaxy Note 5 and that'll most probably arrive in early September as rumors point to.

Take a closer look at Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+


It's no secret that Samsung is pushing the launch of the Galaxy Note 5 forward just to get a headstart at Apple's forthcoming iPhone 6S which will be arriving in September. While we have seen quite a lot about the Galaxy Note 5, these new images paint a full picture as to how the device stacks up against the iPhone 6 Plus.

As expected the Galaxy Note 5 will feature a similar design scheme like on the Galaxy S6 announced this year and it's curvier companion, the Galaxy S6 edge+ is basically just a enlarged Galaxy S6 edge. Both devices will come with 5.7" QHD AMOLED display and is powered by Samsung's new octa core Exynos processor which is just as powerful as the Snapdragon 810 CPU from qualcomm.

But beyond the improved hardware, these two devices look alike from the metal frame to the glass build all around, Samsung is replicating the design of the Galaxy S6. These images also shows the new push-lock S Pen on the Galaxy Note 5 and if you're expecting to see a microSD card or removable battery on either these devices, you will be disappointed.

There is also an image below comparing the Galaxy S6 Edge+ with the iPhone 6 Plus and while the former has a 5.7" display, it still looks more compact than the iPhone 6 Plus which has a slightly smaller 5.5" display. Besides these newfound images of Samsung's upcoming flagship devices, there's also a new thread on reddit which confirms a lot of information about both the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+.

Again, Samsung will be unveiling both these devices during a special Unpacked event this Thursday (August 13) and the only thing that we're yet to know is the price and the software features. The Galaxy Note 5 is expected to arrive in Malaysia by September 5 with a price of RM 2,999 for the base 32GB model.

Samsung Rep came to my retail location and I had a brief time with the two upcoming Samsung devices.
Some quick takeaways:
Overall shape of the Note 5 (to me) felt better in hand. The tapered back really "shrunk" the size down once in hand.
Super Amoled display looked great, especially on the curved screen of the S 6 Edge +.
Note 5 RAM (I know this is a hot topic with S6 users right now) was about at about 50% available after booting up the phone (according to smart manager).
I know it's been reported already, and some people who saw the press renders were hoping they saw an SD slot, but no. No external SD slots on either device.
Note users hoping we would see double the storage on base model, will be saddened to hear that it's 32gb at the base model. :(
6 Edge + has Apps Edge (like the Note Edge!). Swipe in once from the right and Apps Edge comes up, Swipe in again and it switches to people edge.
Double Click the home button for camera works on both.
Comparing it to my iPhone 6+ the Note 5 was slightly thicker, but it was both shorter in height and narrower in width and featured much better weight distribution. (iPhone 6+ feels awkwardly top heavy in comparison).
Note 5 S-Pen does in-fact use a push to pop mechanism.
Initially the cameras looked identical, however Note 5 was slightly brighter (probably negligible, but just passing along what I saw).
The devices I used were unbranded running on non-final software.
If I had to make a choice between the two on the spot, it would probably be the Note 5 because of how nice it felt in hand. It's not easy to make a HUGE phone not so huge in your hands. The 6 Edge+ display is drool worthy, but the hard edges digging into my palms wasn't my thing.

Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Note 5 to go on sale in Malaysia by September 5

Over the last few weeks, we have seen quite a lot of reports, leaks and rumors on Samsung's upcoming phablet and today we're just a week away from the official launch event which is happening in NYC on August 13. While the internet is pretty confident about the look and feel of the Galaxy Note 5 which looks a lot like a bigger Galaxy S6 with an S Pen, there's no actual release date yet.

There has been reports that Samsung plans to roll out the Galaxy Note 5 into major markets the week after it's formal launch and we're yet to confirm that fact. But here in Malaysia, Samsung devices usually come in pretty fast (unlike the iPhone) and this year is no difference as an internal source has just revealed that the Galaxy Note will be making it's way to Malaysia by the first week of September.

This report is pretty plausible as the device itself has already been certified through SIRIM as noted by Mdroid. While there's no concrete data on this report, the source mentioned that Digi, Celcom and Maxis are already gearing up to offer the Galaxy Note 5 by September 5. Whether this ends up being true or not, we'll just have to wait for the unpacked event next week.

As for the expected price of the Galaxy Note 5 in Malaysia, it should be around the RM 2,999 ball park.

The Galaxy Note 5's new S Pen features get shown off in this latest leak


Samsung has already scheduled an unpacked event for August 13 in which we will possible see the launch of both the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ and all that we can do now is patiently wait for the day itself. Well, the leaks in the tech industry do not stop and DroidLife has obtained several images of Samsung's new Galaxy Note 5 phablet.

The device looks to be a an actual retail device with the new software preloaded on to the device as well as the posh new hardware that the Galaxy Note 5 is expected to have. As you can see from the images, this device has a subtly curved back and the sides of the device is lined up with aluminum to give the Galaxy Note 5 that premium look and feel. 

Also there doesn't seem to be an opening for a microSD card slot but it looks like Samsung has included two noise cancelling microphones on the top of the device. From the images we can also clearly see the new S Pen which looks to be constructed out of metal? 

Besides that, this is probably the first time we're seeing actual software on screen and besides the bubbly looking icons, we also have a glimpse at the new Air Command window which apparently can now be customized with third party applications. 

Just remember that Samsung will be unveiling the Galaxy Note 5 in a special Unapcked event late next week in NYC and expect to see the Galaxy Note 5 arrive in Malaysia by the end of the month given it's recent sighting in the SIRIM database.
