HP's new Spectre 13 claims the title of the world's thinnest laptop


Last week at Build, Microsoft unveiled an forthcoming free update to Windows 10 called the Anniversary update but that will only come later this Summer. In the mean time, HP announced their new HP Spectre ultrabook that claims to be the world's thinnest laptop. At just 10.4mm (which is slightly slimmer than a AAA battery), the new 2016 HP Spectre does not sacrifice performance or sheer looks for that slim form factor. 

Unlike other devices this thin (namely the 12-inch MacBook at 13.2mm), HP's new Spectre 13 comes with the power of a regular ultrabook. Being powered by a 6th generation (Skylake) Core i5 and i7 opposed to a Core M CPU, the Specture 13 ides designed to be portable, stylish and powerful. The biggest downside is that while HP's engineers did manage to fit a Core i processor into the package, they did not manage to cram in a high resolution display. As is, the Spectre 13 only features a 1080P non-touch display. On the upside, HP did manage to include dual USB Type C ports that also functions as Thunderbolt 3 interfaces capable of up to 40Gbps speeds

With all of that engineering prowess and the bragging rights to say you have the world's thinnest laptop. HP is pricing the HP Spectre (13) at $1,169.99 and the laptop can be configured with higher end hardware too. HP will begin shipping the world's thinnest laptop sometime next month (May 2016). Windows 10 will soon come with a native Bash Shell


In additon to announcing a brand new version of Windows 10 coming later this Summer and a new HoloLens demo, Microsoft also took the time to please developers. In addition to the cross platform development tools that are currently available, Microsoft is adding yet another well requested dev tool to Windows 10. In the future version of Windows 10, the Bash (Bourne Again Shell) will be available natively on Windows 10.

The shell which was a popular tool on Linux on the Mac in the past enables developers to easily write their .sh Bash scripts. Microsoft says they have worked closely with Canonical on this integration with the Bash shell on Windows 10. With yet another dev tool available on Windows 10, Microsoft is continuing to please Windows developers.

Oh yeah, there's also a new version of Visual Studio 2015 (update 2) available starting today that includes the new SDK for the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update


Windows 10's first major update is called the Anniversary update is coming this Summer


This morning during the opening keynote for Microsoft's 2016 BUILD developer conference, Terry Myerson took the time to announce that there is not over 270 million Windows 10 users and also introduced an upcoming Windows 10 update which have previously been referred as 'redstone'. Called the Windows 10 Anniversary update, the new version of Windows 10 will be coming to users later this Summer, presumably by the time Windows 10's first anniversary hits.


As expected, this upcoming update will slowly trickling out to users in the Windows Insider program in the coming weeks. As for the actual features that will be bundled with this new Anniversary update, the list currently includes things like support for biometric security through select applications on Microsoft Edge, improved inking (Windows Ink) improvements with some visual tweaks and updated support for UWP apps. Just as before, this list will most likely grow as the weeks go by.

Microsoft says that the Windows 10 anniversary update will be rolling out to all Windows 10 PCs in the Summer and the update will be free to all Windows 10 users. While these features are only related to Windows 10 on the PC, expect to hear more details about the Windows 10 Anniversary update for other Windows devices like the XBOX and Mobile.

Microsoft is now rolling out the Windows 10 Mobile update

The wait is evidently over (or maybe not) as Microsoft has announced via a blog post that they are beginning to roll out the long awaited Windows 10 Mobile update to existing Windows Phone 8.1 devices. After countless delays in the past, the update designated for existing Windows Phone devices will be rolling out in stages and is carrier and region specific in a sense. But as said before, once on Windows 10 Mobile, Microsoft will be controlling all the updates from here on out

While Microsoft previously announced that all Windows Phone 8.1 devices will be able to upgrade to the latest and greatest, that doesn't seem to be the case here as Microsoft is now saying that they will only release the official Windows 10 Mobile update only to devices which are capable of supporting the new features. Notably, devices with 512MB of RAM will not be able to upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile anytime soon. Below here is the list of devices that are slated to receive the Windows 10 Mobile update in the coming weeks.

HP's Elite X3 is a Windows Phone that can be a laptop and a computer

The trend these days is to make smartphones and HP is bucking up to that trend with it's first smartphone in years (remember the Palm Pre?). But unlike everyone else, HP's smartphone is not powered by Android but rather the PC maker has chosen Microsoft's Windows 10 Mobile operating system as their comeback to the smartphone race. 

HP chose Windows 10 Mobile mainly because of the unique continuum feature that Microsoft has built into their mobile operating system that enables a smartphone to effectively transform into a desktop like experience.

As you see from the spec sheet above, the HP Elite X3 is the first Windows Phone to run on Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 820 SoC which is also powering Android flagships like the LG G5 and Galaxy S7. The reason why HP is decking out the Elite X3 with the best mobile processor available and 4GB of RAM is because HP is expecting the people who buy this phone to take advantage of continuum.

To enable continuum, HP is readying two accessories, one of them is called the Desk Dock which is a a dock that gives the phone a couple of USB ports, a display out and a wired ethernet port. Another Continuum accessory that the HP Elite X3 will work with is called the Mobile Extender. Despite the name, HP's Mobile Extender is basically a laptop without the internal hardware.

Why no internal hardware you ask? Well, the Mobile Extender takes Microsoft's continuum off to a next level as the Mobile Extender will wirelessly connect with the HP Elite X3 (and maybe even other Continuum compatible devices) and provide you with a laptop experience all from the smartphone.

At the moment, HP says they are targeting to launch the HP Elite X3 later in the Summer but we'll most likely hear more of the HP Elite X3 during Build 2016 in April.

Huawei's MateBook is the company's first Windows 10 device

While everyone else is announcing flagship android smartphone at Mobile World Congress 2016, Huawei in the other hand is taking the opportunity to launch their very first Windows 10 device called the Huawei MateBook. Mind you that the press image above and below is a little inaccurate as it is display the Windows 8 Start Screen but the Huawei MateBook itself actually ships with Windows 10. 

But going back to the MateBook itself, this device is Huawei's first Windows powered device and the 12-inch tablet weighs in at just 640g and is just 6.9mm thin. That makes the Huawei MateBook far more compact that Microsoft's own Surface Pro 4. Additionally, Huawei is also taking some inspiration from Microsoft's own Surface lineup by creating a keyboard cover and a pressure sensitive pen that works with the Huawei MateBook. 

The biggest difference here between the MateBook and Microsoft's own Surface lineup in general is that the MateBook actually comes with the keyboard cover and the MatePen (stylus) is actually an optional accessory. Huawei says the MatePen has 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity and the pen also doubles as a laser pointer for presentations.

While the Huawei MateBook does not have the hardware to do a face unlock like on the Surface Pro 4, Huawei has included a fingerprint sensor on the side of the MateBook which allows for biometric authentication. Additionally, Huawei claims that the 360-degree fingerprint reader on the MateBook is the fastest fingerprint recognition in the industry. 

The Huawei MateBook will be launched in Asia, Europe and North America in the coming months and the pricing for the various models is as below.

Alcatel unveils it's first Windows 10 powered tablet convertible


The former Alcatel OneTouch which is known for it's line of affordable android smartphones announced it's first Windows 10 powered machine alongside the rebranding of the company's name to just 'Alcatel'. Called the Alcatel Plus 10, this tablet comes with it's own keyboard accessory that not only completes the Windows 10 experience but also houses another set of battery that gives the Alcatel Plus 10 a battery life of up to 8,410mAh

Essentially, the Alcatel Plus 10 is a pretty mid-range Windows 10 tablet and marks the company's foray into the Windows 10 market. Alcatel says the Plus 10 tablet will be available in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa by June 2016. No pricing has been announced but the tablet will be displayed on the company's MWC 2016 booth next week.

Harvey Norman Malaysia unveils the Charge Plus 2-in-1 laptop retailing at RM 1,899

The smartphone was between manufacturers is pretty strong these days but the PC market despite the decline in market share is still a thriving industry. In fact, companies like Huawei is getting ready to extend their reach to serve the declining PC market with Microsoft's big push at Windows 10. With that in mind, Australian-based Harvey Norman which has stores throughout Malaysia is entering the PC market with the Malaysia-exclusive Charge Plus 2-in-1 computer.

Made in collaboration with Intel Malaysia and Microsoft Malaysia, the Charge Plus 2-in-1 will be exclusively available at Harvey Norman outlets throughout the country. While the device does not explicitly have any sort of Harvey Norman branding whatsoever, the device is very much a proprietary product.
At the core of Harvey Norman's Charge Plus 2-in-1 laptop convertible is Intel's Cherry Trail T8300 SoC paired with 2GB of RAM and the device does run Windows 10 too. The 11.6-inch display is detachable and this compact tablet convertible PC has 64GB of internal memory that can be expanded with a microSD card. Harvey Norman is pricing this one of a kind device at RM 1,899 and if you are the first 500 customer to purchase the device, you will also walk away with freebies that is worth over RM 1,000.

Microsoft announces the Lumia 650 powered by the Snapdragon 212 SoC

After quite a number of months being in the rumour mills, today Microsoft is formally announcing the Microsoft Lumia 650 which according to credible reports will be the last Lumia phone from Microsoft as the company moves it's mobile business to the Surface brand. Nothing is confirmed at this point, so take it with a grain of salt. But, as for the Lumia 650 itself, this device is priced at US$ 199 (~ RM 822) and will go on sale in Europe on February 18.

As expected, the Lumia 650 comes with a metal frame paired up with a white or black polycarbonate back. And of course, the Lumia 650 comes loaded with Microsoft's new Windows 10 Mobile OS and joins the likes of the Lumia 550 and Lumia 950 series. Similar to the Lumia 550 launch, it seems that Microsoft is targeting the Lumia 650 for enterprise users than actual consumers.

Expect to see the Lumia 650 launch in Malaysia sometime soon and the device will be available in Dual SIM variants which will likely be the one coming to Malaysia. Learn more about the availability of the Lumia 650 here in Malaysia here

Microsoft Lumia 550 now available in Malaysia for RM 559


It is January already and Microsoft has yet to announce any concrete plans as to when the Windows 10 update will be rolling out to existing Lumias running Windows Phone 8.1. The update might not be here but an affordable option to try Microsoft's latest smartphone OS, the Lumia 550 is now available in Malaysia for a not to high price of RM 259.

The Microsoft Lumia 550 was spotted during the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL launch last month and back then it was exclusive to Digi business users but starting today (January 15), the Lumia 550 is available to everyone for only RM 559 inclusive of GST through Microsoft Authorized Resellers across the country.

Beyond the affordable price, the Lumia 550 is a pretty solid smartphone that runs the latest Windows 10 Mobile software and supports 4G LTE in Malaysia. The only downside of the Lumia 550 is it's not so perfect Snapdragon 210 CPU that is quad core but runs at only 1.1GHz but that should't be a problem for Windows 10 phones as the UI uses resources pretty efficiently. Alongside the Lumia 550, Microsoft Malaysia is also announcing the availability of the Nokia 230 Dual SIM which is a series 40 feature phone that comes with a premium metal design and costs only RM 269. The Nokia 230 isn't super rich in features compared to the Lumia 550 but it does have an amazing 23 hours of talktime.
