UMobile introduces shared data with their new Hero Plus postpaid plan

UMobile is always looking to challenge what others are offering and this time around, they are introducing the ability to share data with other UMobile customers. How this works is that a principal line will need to be formed out of the Hero P70 plan which includes 7GB of data. And from there, up to 3 'member' lines can be added to the principal line to form a cumulative data cap of 16GB. The 'member' lines consists of the Share 50 plan which has 3GB of data.

This means that there will be a pool of 16GB of data that can be shared between 4 users and it does not restrict the use to an equal distribution between users. What this means is that the data cap is actively being shared between the users and one user can end up using more than the other.

Beyond being able to share data with up to 4 users, the Hero Plus plan from UMobile also comes with the usual perks like unlimited calls to all networks and you can share this plan with someone from RM 120 for a payment of RM 60 per month and that price goes down to RM 55 when you share it with 4 users. UMobile is giving all UMI subscribers 1GB of free data through January 2016


Looks like UMobile has no plans to be outdone by is competitors in 2016 as they have just announced that their prepaid users subscribed to any UMI plan will be receiving 1GB of free data in January 2016. This deal just comes after last month's year end offer which provided all postpaid and prepaid users with 1GB of free data through the month of December 2015.

We are not exactly sure why UMobile is doing this once again but this will benefit prepaid users with extra 1GB of data and if you do have the UMobile Power Prepaid Pack from 2015, this means that you will get 2GB more than what your UMI plan gives you. So, essentially UMobile is trying to retain you as their prepaid customer and given that the new GST Rebate program is live, local residents will not need to pay GST for reload cards.

So, if you are a prepaid user or an existing UMI subscriber, all you have to do to receive this extra 1GB of data is to renew your UMI plan within January 2016 and you're all set to getting more data at no extra charge. Learn more about UMobile's UMI plan for prepaid users here

Prepaid reloads will still be imposed with 6% GST in 2016


In April this year, Malaysia implemented a new unified Tax called GST which combined existing sales tax values into a single 6%. Some medicinal goods and basic necessities were excluded from GST but oddly enough, prepaid reload coupons did require an extra 6% over the base value of the reload. This caused a little backlash come April 1st and MCMC swayed between including and excluding 6% GST towards a prepaid reload card.

Despite that i still insisted on buying the Top Up card there. Currently, prepaid reload cards still cost 6% more but telco companies like UMobile have reimbursed users with extra calls and SMS to customers. But, the word is out now that the 6% GST will still be imposed towards a purchase of a prepaid reload card in 2016. But here's the big difference, instead of adding 6%, the new system being implemented in 2016 will deduct the GST value from the prepaid value you bought.

So, a RM 10 prepaid reload coupon will only credit RM 9.43 to your account. So, the good news is that you no longer need to carry around a man purse to store all the extra coins to get a prepaid reload and the even better news is that MCMC is the RM 0.57 GST imposed on the RM 10 reload will be credited back to your account within 24 hours. But the catch is that the system will only credit back the GST amount if you are a Malaysia (meaning, you telephone number needs to be registered with a Malaysia IC in order to get the full value of the reload).

In essence, this new system being implemented for prepaid reloads in Malaysia will only benefit Malaysians and foreigners will need to surrender 6% of their reload value. Well, at least the prepaid reloads will not cost what is used to be but like all good things, this scheme might not last long as the documentation only lists this system being valid through 31 December 2016.

UMobile spreads the holiday spirit with 1GB free data for prepaid and postpaid plans


You might have heard that UMobile was recently crowned the fastest mobile network in Malaysia by speedtest.net maker Ookla and to spread the joy and also to celebrate the holiday spirit, UMobile will be rewarding all their internet users with 1GB of data on top of their usual quota. This means that if you usually have 2GB data on your UMI25 plans, you will receive a complimentary 1GB of data this month.


However, as amazing as this sounds, you will need to be subscribed to a data plan in this promo period to receive that extra 1GB of data. Existing and new UMobile customers will be able to take advantage of this promotion as long as they are subscribe to any data plan that UMobile offers. This promo is valid thru 31 December 2015.

Hotlink FAST, a new prepaid plan that comes with 4G LTE data


The prepaid category in Malaysia has evolved drastically in 2015. From the fiasco which increased the price of reload coupons by 6% to both UMobile and Celcom unveiling new prepaid plans designed to bring more internet value to everyone. Well, today Hotlink (Maxis) is taking wraps off their brand new prepaid plan which is designed to take advantage of Maxis's quot on quote No.1 4G LTE Network.


Not to be outdone by UMobile's Power Prepaid Pack which comes with and extra 1GB of internet for life, Hotlink's new Hotlink FAST prepaid plan comes with a balance of both the conventional 3G speeds and also a piece of 4G LTE internet with the new Hotlink FAST plan. This means that you will have two different kinds of quota and how all this works is that the 4G data will be activated when you are inside Maxis's 4G LTE coverage (60% across Malaysia) and 3G data will resume when there's no 4G LTE coverage.

This quota is a little contradicting as the Hotlink website says that the 4G LTE quota can only be used on a 4G LTE network. So, does this mean that you lose half of the advertised quota is you do not use a 4G LTE enabled phone?

Nevertheless, if you do run out of internet quota within the validity period, you can top up 150MB, 500MB or 1GB of data for RM3, RM 8 and RM 12 respectively. Also, once the quota is reached, internet will stop it's service and unlike the plans with UMobile and Celcom, Hotlink's FAST prepaid plan does not come with unlimited 64kbps internet.
