Samsung Galaxy S7 edge priced at RM 3,099 in Malaysia

Last week's announcement of the Galaxy S7 series in Barcelona opened up pre-orders for the device in several key markets like Singapore and the US but as we have already learnt, the Galaxy S7 will be arriving in Malaysia on March 18 and pre-order will begin on next Monday (March 17). Samsung Malaysia has previously said that only the Galaxy S7 edge will be making it's way to Malaysia this year (officially that is) and the regular 5.1-inch Galaxy S7 will not be offered by Samsung Malaysia.

But let's cut to the chase, Samsung Malaysia has revealed that the price for the Galaxy S7 edge is set at RM 3,099 which is the same price as the Galaxy S6 edge from last year. Also similar to last year is that Samsung is once again opening up a pre-order for the Galaxy S7 edge and instead of giving out free wireless chargers, Samsung is cutting the price by 20% which essentially brings down the price of the Galaxy S7 edge to only RM 2,479 and if that doesn't entice you to pre-order the device, Samsung is also giving out a 128GB microSD card that will expand the 32GB of onboard storage available on the Galaxy S7 edge and also a extra year of extended warranty.

The caveat here is that this offer will only work for the first 1,000 pre-orders and can only be done through Samsung's online portal on the 7th of March, 12am. The deal is probably going to sell out pretty fast and just remember that you'll simply just need to put down a RM 300 deposit in order to pre-order the Galaxy S7 edge. In addition to all of that, customers who pre-order the Galaxy S7 edge from March 7-11 will be receiving the Galaxy S7 edge on March 17 which is one day before the Galaxy S7 edge officially lands in Malaysia. Samsung's brand new Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will go on sale on March 11

After this morning's announcement of the LG G5, Samsung is trailing behind a little with the unveiling of the Galaxy S7 series which like last year includes both a standard flat screen model and a second curved screened model. Say hello to the brand new Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, unlike it's predecessor, Samsung's 2016 flagship offerings brings back the microSD slot and IP68 certification from the Galaxy S5.

microSD cards and water resistivity is now back with the Galaxy S7
Unlike LG, Samsung has not radically changed the design of the Galaxy S7 series and in fact, it's actually hard to tell them apart when compared side by side. The Galaxy S7 in particular still comes with a 5.1-inch display but the Galaxy S7 edge is now armed with a larger 5.5-inch curved display. One notable change from the Galaxy S6 to the Galaxy S7 series is that Samsung has reduced the camera bump on the Galaxy S7 but there's still a slight bump on the back.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Key Specifications:

  • 5.1-inch 2560 x 1440 sAMOLED display
  • 64-bit octa core Exynos or Snapdragon 820 SoC
  • 4GB RAM
  • 32G/64GB expandable memory
  • 12MP f1.7 Dual pixel rear camera with OIS
  • 5MP f1.7 front camera
  • IP68 certification
  • 3,000mAh battery with wireless charging
  • LTE
  • 142.4 x 69.6 x 7.9mm (152g)
  • Fingerprint scanner with Samsung Pay

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Key Specifications:

  • 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 sAMOLED display
  • 64-bit octa core Exynos or Snapdragon 820 SoC
  • 4GB RAM
  • 32/64GB expandable memory
  • 12MP f1.7 Dual pixel rear camera with OIS
  • 5MP f1.7 front camera
  • IP68 certification
  • 3,600mAh battery with wireless charging
  • LTE
  • 150.9 x 72.6 x 7.7mm (157g)
  • Fingerprint scanner with Samsung Pay

Samsung did not shake up the design of the Galaxy S7 but the device does come with some new tricks up it's sleeve. Most notably is it's always-on display which utilized the super AMOLED display to allow the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge to display information passively. Samsung says the Galaxy S7 is smart enough to know when the phone is in your pocket and when it's not so it doesn't bring up the always on display in your pocket.

Samsung didn't stop there and while the battery is still very much sealed in the glass and metal design, both the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge received a big battery bump from just 2,600mAh on the Galaxy S6 and up to 3,600mAh with the Galaxy S7 edge. While the battery life will most likely be improved with this larger cell, the Galaxy S7 series is still relying on the microUSB port and Samsung says the USB Type C port is still not ready for prime time and the fact that Samsung is trying to get backwards compatibility with the existing Gear VR which still uses a microUSB port.

In the camera department, Samsung for the first time is dropping the megapixel count and going towards the direction that Apple is going fore that is a bigger sensor size. The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge comes with 1.4µm sensor that has a larger f1.7 aperture. Another thing that Samsung is implementing on the camera of the Galaxy S7 is a technology call Dual pixel which uses all the pixels to focus on a object.

The combination of a larger sensor and the Dual pixel technology enables the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge's camera to perform significantly better in low light and have fast and accurate autofocus. Learn more about the Galaxy S7's new 12MP camera here

As for the software, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge is still running TouchWiz atop Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The aesthetics of stock TouchWiz still looks pretty similar to TouchWiz on the Galaxy S6 but specifically for the Galaxy S7 edge, Samsung has updated the Apps Edge feature to take advantage of the bigger screen. Instead of just showing icons, the apps compatible with Samsung's Apps Edge will now be able to take up to 1/3 of the screen which vastly improves on the functionality of the feature.

Both the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 edge will be available globally starting March 11 and the pricing for both devices will be similar to the one for the Galaxy S6 series. Particularly in Malaysia, Samsung Malaysia will begin opening up pre-orders for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge starting March 7 and the device will officially go on sale in Malaysia on March 18. No official word on pricing yet but expect the Galaxy S7 to start at around RM 2,599. Both devices will come in either gold, black or silver.

Gear 360 camera

Oh yeah, before I forget. Samsung also showed off a 360 degree camera cleverly called the Gear 360. The camera the size of a tennis ball is designed to create immersive videos at 4k resolution. This is done by having two CMOS 15MP fisheye camera on the front fan back and the built in accelerometer and gyroscope make sure that your video is right when you upload it to services like Facebook, Youtube or even Samsung's own Milk VR service.

But the Gear 360 isn't only about taking 360 degree videos, you could also use it to take 2D pictures and even some wide angle selfies. Similar to the Galaxy S7, the Gear 360 is also built to withstand the elements with it's IP53 certification. However, unlike the Galaxy S7, the Gear 360 will only be available in select regions in the 2nd quarter of 2016 (Q2 2016).

Celcom introduces the NewPhone program that let's you upgrade every 12 months

The cost of owning a smartphone has increased quite significantly in the last few years if you're looking for a top of the line device. Moat notably, US carriers like T-Mobile and AT&T are offering phone upgrade plans which does not tie down the user to a 2 year contract. The upgrade program has proven to be pretty popular as Apple also announced such a program alongside the iPhone 6S but that is currently exclusive to US at the moment.

But what if you want to get such a program in Malaysia? Well, you could sign up for Maxis's Zerolution plan which has been out for some time now and encompasses quite a wide range of device or you can subscribe to Celcom's NewPhone program that has the same benefits of Maxis's own Zerolution plan. But the biggest difference here is that Celcom's new NewPhone program currently only a couple of Samsung devices (all of them which are Samsung branded).

You might not be able to get the iPhone 6S through Celcom's NewPhone plan at the moment but options like the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ and Samsung Galaxy Note5 are also good. The main difference between what Maxis is offering opposed to Celcom's NewPhone plan is that with Celcom, you can enjoy the benefits of the NewPhone program with any postpaid plan from Celcom. Whether you are an existing or new customer doesn't matter and from as low as RM 100 (RM 45 + RM 55), you can enjoy the Galaxy J7 with Celcom's RM 45 plan that includes 2GB of data.

But realistically, you want a high end phone right. Monthly payments for the Celcom NewPhone plan goes up to RM 175 for the Galaxy S6 edge+ and you could save RM 29 a month by opting out of the device protection but I would rather not do that as you do need to return the phone in a good working condition if you want to be eligible for the upgrade.

As for the upgrade portion of Celcom's NewPhone program, you will be automatically eligable to upgrade to a new phone after 12 months but in addition to that, you can also opt in to upgrade a little earlier but that'll cost you as low as RM 300 and goes up to RM 1,000 if you're trying to do an early upgrade with the Galaxy S6 edge+ to get the new Galaxy S7 edge on Celcom's NewPhone program.

That's it, a pretty simple upgrade program from Celcom which you opt-in starting today at any Blue Cube outlet throughout Malaysia. Learn more about the tiny little details on Celcom's new NewPhone program here

Samsung's 18.4-inch Galaxy View tablet arrives in Malaysia for RM 2,699

Apple's iPad Pro is no doubt a big iPad but Samsung's Galaxy View is in a category of it's own. The Galaxy View is designed to be Samsung's vision for the Galaxy Note but for a tablet. Instead of predicting the future with big screen (which they already did), Samsung is preparing for the future when tablets are the size of computer monitors.

But what truly makes the Galaxy View stand apart from just about any other table in the market is that it has a frigging handle which also doubles as a kickstand to prop up the tablet for viewing content. In terms of hardware, sure you could do the 4 way multitasking like any other (modern) Samsung tablet, but the Galaxy View actually comes built in with a unique tiled layout designed to take advantage of the device's form factor.

Samsung Galaxy View Key Specification:

  • 18.4-inch 1080P display
  • Exynos 7580 @ 1.6GHz
  • 2GB RAM
  • 32GB memory
  • 2.1MP front camera
  • 451.86 x 275.84 x 11.94mm
  • 2.65kg

While the Galaxy View does come with a useful handle bar so you can easily carry the Galaxy View which weighs just under 3kg, Samsung Malaysia is having a promotion for the launch of the Galaxy View in Malaysia. For a limited time (or while stocks lasts), every purchase of the RM 2,699 Wi-Fi only Galaxy View tablet will receive a free custom tailored casing worth RM 199.

The Galaxy View is now available at your nearest Samsung Experience Store. Get an exclusive casing with every purchase of the Galaxy View while stocks last. Hurry, get yours today!www.samsung.com/my/

This is the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge

While flagships smartphones didn't make the cut during CES 2016, the attention is now moved towards MWC 2015 as both Samsung and LG are expected to tank it out with their new refreshed flagships for 2016. There has been talks about the Galaxy S7 and LG G5 over the holiday season but those were just rumors and reports.

If you were hoping that Samsung will be dishing out something totally new this year, you're out of luck. Prolific phone leaker, Evan Blass is confirming that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will retain most of the design aspects of last year's Galaxy S6. Expect to see the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge debut officially during MWC 2016 in Barcelona and the device will be rolling out globally in early March.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Specifications (unconfirmed)

  • 5.1-inch 1440 x 2560 Super AMOLED display (5.5-inch for S7 edge)
  • Exynos 8890 or Snapdragon 820 SoC
  • 4GB RAM
  • 32/64GB storage
  • microSD slot
  • 12MP f1.7 camera
  • 3,000mAh battery (3,600mAh for S7 Edge)

Samsung goes glass and metal with their new lineup of mainstream smartphones

Samsung has been restructuring their mobile phone portfolio since 2014 and with the both the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy Note5 announced, it is clear that Samsung is no longer interested in building plastic phones. While their flagship lineup has been given the refresh this year, today Samsung is giving their premium Galaxy A lineup a brand new look for 2016.

What's next for Samsung? — Arguably Samsung has chosen the right path to innovate from the ground up with higher quality materials and innovating closely to Apple's terms meaning that not every year will we be able to see flashy new flagship devices with a radically improved feature set across the board. But the important thing is the they have taken the first step. Continue reading.
By brand new look, it basically looks a lot like the Galaxy S6 all around, there's even the same camera bump on the back. With a metal and glass build just like Samsung's 2015 flagship phones, the new 2016 Galaxy A3, A5, and A7 has been given a nice upgrade from the metal unibody design of the original Galaxy A series. But unlike the Galaxy S6, the new 2016 Galaxy A series comes loaded with a microSD card slot despite the glass and metal build.

Other features include an optional Dual SIM variant which is most likely coming to Malaysia, support for Samsung Pay, Samsung KNOX, two new f1.9 camera, Bluetooth 4.1, support for Fast Charging and also the inclusion of a fingerprint scanner on the home button. All three devices feature the exact same design and feature set and the only difference is in terms of the internal hardware and the actual size of the device. At launch, the 2016 Galaxy A series will be running Android 5.1 Lollipop and will most likely be upgraded to Android 6.0 Marshmallow sometime in 2016.

Samsung will start rolling out the new 2016 Galaxy A3, A5 and A7 in China in mid-December and other regions will receive the new 2016 Galaxy A series sometime next year. In terms of pricing, expect the prices of the new models to be similar to that of the existing Galaxy A models.

Samsung's new BRITECELL CMOS sensor will perform significantly better in low light

With the Galaxy S5 in 2014, Samsung started using a new CMOS sensor called ISOCELL and that proprietary sensor was designed to improve the sensor's response to light. Today at the Samsung Electronics 2015 Investor Forum, BRITECELL was officially announced as a new smartphone sensor technology.

Building up the ISOCELL sensor, this new BRITECELL sensor which will probably make it's debut on the upcoming Galaxy S7 will show better results in low light by the enhanced light sensitivity and improved color reproduction. The new BRITCELL sensor will be 1 micron big and the sensor itself will be physically thinner than similarly performing sensors.

Other goodies being included in Samsung's new BRITECELL sensor includes Samsung' WDR technology that improves on multi-exposure images and also a Phase Detection Auto Focus system. Overall, Samsung's new BRITECELL sensor might see the end of camera humps and the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy Note6 will be able to take on the LG G5 in terms of low light capabilities.
