Hotlink FAST, a new prepaid plan that comes with 4G LTE data

The prepaid category in Malaysia has evolved drastically in 2015. From the fiasco which increased the price of reload coupons by 6% to both UMobile and Celcom unveiling new prepaid plans designed to bring more internet value to everyone. Well, today Hotlink (Maxis) is taking wraps off their brand new prepaid plan which is designed to take advantage of Maxis's quot on quote No.1 4G LTE Network.

Not to be outdone by UMobile's Power Prepaid Pack which comes with and extra 1GB of internet for life, Hotlink's new Hotlink FAST prepaid plan comes with a balance of both the conventional 3G speeds and also a piece of 4G LTE internet with the new Hotlink FAST plan. This means that you will have two different kinds of quota and how all this works is that the 4G data will be activated when you are inside Maxis's 4G LTE coverage (60% across Malaysia) and 3G data will resume when there's no 4G LTE coverage.

This quota is a little contradicting as the Hotlink website says that the 4G LTE quota can only be used on a 4G LTE network. So, does this mean that you lose half of the advertised quota is you do not use a 4G LTE enabled phone?

Nevertheless, if you do run out of internet quota within the validity period, you can top up 150MB, 500MB or 1GB of data for RM3, RM 8 and RM 12 respectively. Also, once the quota is reached, internet will stop it's service and unlike the plans with UMobile and Celcom, Hotlink's FAST prepaid plan does not come with unlimited 64kbps internet.

OnePlus X officially arrives in Malaysia next week for RM 1,288

OnePlus, the company behind the #FlagshipKiller line of devices recently unveiled a premium android smartphone that trades of futuristic improvements for style. Dubbed the OnePlus X, the device has since then been made available in countries like the US and India but can only be purchased with the invite system (for the first 30 days only).

Well, earlier this year local telco company Maxis announced a partnership between OnePlus to officially sell the OnePlus One in Malaysia and since then, Maxis also started offering the newer OnePlus 2 to their customers. But it looks like Maxis will not be the only one selling OnePlus devices in Malaysia (officially that is) as Brightstar which also the official distributor of Motorola devices in Malaysia has opened up a Pre-order page through Lazada for the #PowerfullyBeautiful OnePlus X.

As for the price, Brightstar is pricing the OnePlus X a little higher compared to the RRP from OnePlus which is just US$ 249 (or about MYR 1,048 with today's exchange rate). For RM 1,288 you will be getting the premium metal and glass design paired with an older Snapdragon 801 CPU with a 5" 1080P display, 3GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable memory, a 13MP rear camera, an 8MP fron camera and a 2,525mAh battery.

The specifications themselves don't match up to the flagship killer standards that the company is used to but as I mentioned earlier, the OnePlus X is designed to be a device that flaunts it's looks rather than it's brains. Also, unlike the OnePlus 2, this device uses a standard microUSB port for charging and it also comes with a microSD card slot which doubles as a second nano SIM card slot.

You can now start Pre-ordering the OnePlus X through the official listing on Lazada for RM 1,288 which includes a free protective case and orders are expected to arrive next Friday (December 4) and No, you do not need a invite to buy the OnePlus X in Malaysia but we are unsure whether is this listing based on a limited stock or not

Just last month OnePlus announced the successor to their first flagship killer called the OnePlus 2. While the device has already started to ship to other countries, we're yet to see the device make it to Asia officially. Well the wait is nearly over as a little while back we heard that Maxis will be carrying the new OnePlus 2 and the day has somewhat arrived.

The teclo is now opening up registrations to get an invite to purchase the OnePlus 2 in Malaysia. Yes, OnePlus is still on with the invite system in order to purchase their new 2016 Flagship Killer. All you have to do is fill in your details like you name, IC no., telephone number and email and you're instantly in the running to earn yourself the privilege to buy the OnePlus 2 in Malaysia

Maxis's exclusivity of the OnePlus 2 in Malaysia goes back to earlier this year when OnePlus announced the first partnership with a mobile carrier company giving undivided access to the outgoing OnePlus One for Malaysian customers. 

To recap, the OnePlus 2 comes with the same 5.5" 1080P display like before but OnePlus managed to slip the hardware into a slightly compact body. Powering this new Flagship Killer is Qualcomm's flagship Snadragon 810 CPU, 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, 16/64GB of internal storage, a 3,300mAh non-removable battery, a new and improved 13MP rear camera, and a USB Type-C connector to round things out. 

While Maxis will indeed be handing out invites through this registration, there's no word as to how much will the OnePlus 2 cost in Malaysia and when will customers will be able to purchase it. Doing a little currency exchange, the 16GB OnePlus 2 should cost around RM 1,339 ($329) and about RM 1,583 ($389) for the 64GB model. Give or take, the prices of the OnePlus 2 should be something like this.

Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Note 5 to go on sale in Malaysia by September 5

Over the last few weeks, we have seen quite a lot of reports, leaks and rumors on Samsung's upcoming phablet and today we're just a week away from the official launch event which is happening in NYC on August 13. While the internet is pretty confident about the look and feel of the Galaxy Note 5 which looks a lot like a bigger Galaxy S6 with an S Pen, there's no actual release date yet.

There has been reports that Samsung plans to roll out the Galaxy Note 5 into major markets the week after it's formal launch and we're yet to confirm that fact. But here in Malaysia, Samsung devices usually come in pretty fast (unlike the iPhone) and this year is no difference as an internal source has just revealed that the Galaxy Note will be making it's way to Malaysia by the first week of September.

This report is pretty plausible as the device itself has already been certified through SIRIM as noted by Mdroid. While there's no concrete data on this report, the source mentioned that Digi, Celcom and Maxis are already gearing up to offer the Galaxy Note 5 by September 5. Whether this ends up being true or not, we'll just have to wait for the unpacked event next week.

As for the expected price of the Galaxy Note 5 in Malaysia, it should be around the RM 2,999 ball park.
