Google introduces customizable $35 cases for the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P


In the past, one of the biggest reasons to get a Nexus phone was because of vanilla android and the ability to get the next great version of Android from day 1. In the last couple of years, Google start making Nexus devices more competitive in terms of pricing and today, Google is once again putting up another reason for you to get a Nexus phone. 

Google is calling this Live Cases and the new $35 case available exclusively through the Google Store will enable you to build a custom case from your personal image and in addition to that, when the case is attached to either the Nexus 6P or Nexus 5X, the wallpaper will automatically match the case you have. Additionally, on the back of the case is also a secondary button that users can map to launch any application of their choice
This new concept is pretty interesting and it looks like Google got some inspiration from Motorola's Moto Maker interface as the Live Case design dashboard is pretty similar. At $35, this new Live Case is currently exclusive to both the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P and is also limited to regions which have access to the Google Store. Users can opt in to print their favorite photo on the case or a map so you don't end up getting lost.

LG officially unveils the LG G5 and Friends


Starting off MWC 2016 this year is LG and to no surprise at all, the company is unveiling their latest flagship creation which redefines it's previous designs. Firstly, the device will be called the LG G5 and unlike other LG flagship in the past, the LG G5 is the first one to sport a metal unibody design coupled along with chamfered edges. Another radical change is that the rear volume rockers which has been part of LG's flagship line for 3 years is now only left with a rear mounted power button that doubles as a fingerprint scanner on the LG G5.



But what fundamentally sets the LG G5 apart from other flagships is that LG has built in a modular system which they are calling as 'friends'. This feature utilizes the power of the LG G5's removable chin bar which also gives access to the 2,800mAh battery to enable the LG G5 to expand it's functionality to have features like a camera grip and a 32-bit DAC. Currently, there's only 2 options for the magic slot but LG is claiming that their partners will also be making accessories to take advantage of that special slot on the LG G5.

Another new addition in terms of the hardware is a dual camera setup on the back of the LG G5. No, this is not some crazy setup to get 3D images but LG is leveraging this dual camera setup on the LG G5 to provide wide angle photos and images in contrast will be 1.7 times wider compared to conventional lenses.


That's not all in terms of added functionality as LG is also announcing a range of optional accessories called 'friends' to complement the LG G5.
  1. LG 360 CAM - A 360 camera that comes with dual 13MP 200-degree wide angle cameras and is capable of taking 2K video with 5.1 surround sound audio. 
  2. LG 360 VR - A VR goggle that connects via USB C to the LG G5 and is able to simulate a 130-inch TV viewed from 2 metres away. Compatible with Google Cardboard apps and photos and videos captured with the LG 360 CAM.
  3. LG Rolling Bot - A companion device that rolls like a ball when capturing images with it's embedded 8MP camera. The camera can be used as an IP camera to remotely monitor through Wi-Fi from the LG G5.
  4. LG CAM Plus - A versatile camera module that attaches to the LG G5's battery slot to provide a stable grip for the photographer and adds a physical power, shutter, record, zoom button alongside the extended 1,200mAh battery. 
  5. LG Hi-FI Plus - A 32-bit Hi-Fi DAC developed in collaboration with B&O PLAY improves audio quality on the LG G5. 
At the moment, LG is not revealing the pricing of the LG G5 or the 'Friends' (accessories) but LG says the LG G5 will rolling out in South Korea on March 31 and the United States on April 1 followed by key markets in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Approximately 200 carriers and operators worldwide have committed to offer the G5 in their local markets.

LG branches out to a new smartphone category with the LG Stylus 2


For a moment, it seemed like LG was only focusing on their flagship devices but the announcement of the LG X-series yesterday shows the company's interest in expending their mid-range offerings. As the official sequel to last year's LG G4 Stylus, the new LG Stylus 2 looks to be yet another product line that LG is branching out with their device strategy.

Similar to it's distant predecessor, the new LG Stylus 2 is all about the rubber tipped stylus which pairs up nicely with various software enhancements that LG is implementing to take advantage of that dedicated stylus. That's not all, the new LG Stylus 2 also boasts a new Pen Keeper feature that alerts you when the you misplace the pen.

The LG Stylus 2 is by no means a flagship device but it does have a pretty large 5.7-inch display paired with a quad-core SoC to make the LG Stylus 2 a pretty decent mid-range device. Just like the LG G5 and the LG X-Series, the LG Stylus 2 will be on LG's booth during Mobile World Congress 2016.

    LG's new X-series smartphones come with speciality features of the LG G5

    Just last week, LG officially confirmed the LG G5 will be debuted during MWC 2016 with their announcement of the official LG G5 case. It seems that LG is not only planning to display the LG G5 at their MWC 2016 booth, the newly announced LG X Cam and LG X Screen will be also be making an entrance alongside LG's new flagship smartphone, the G5. The reason why LG is launching this new series at MWC 2016 is because the new LG X Cam and LG X Screen are both mid-range devices with flagship features.

    Essentially, the new LG X Cam is the device with the excellent camera from LG's flagship line and the LG X Screen is the one with a high-end display that came alongside with the LG V10. The camera on the LG X Cam is described to be a dual camera setup which will provide unrivaled performance in this price point and the design of this device includes a 'seamless 3D bending glass' that gives the LG X Cam sleek form factor. The LG X Screen in the other hand comes with a glass fiber exterior design and also includes the always-on second screen that debuted with the LG V10

    In terms of actual hardware, the LG X Screen is the smaller one with a 5-inch display and the LG X Cam is the bigger of the two with a 5.2-inch display. Both devices will debut during MWC 2016 alongside the LG G5 and is expected to go on sale in Asia, Europe and Latin America in March 2016.

      This is the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge

      While flagships smartphones didn't make the cut during CES 2016, the attention is now moved towards MWC 2015 as both Samsung and LG are expected to tank it out with their new refreshed flagships for 2016. There has been talks about the Galaxy S7 and LG G5 over the holiday season but those were just rumors and reports.

      If you were hoping that Samsung will be dishing out something totally new this year, you're out of luck. Prolific phone leaker, Evan Blass is confirming that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will retain most of the design aspects of last year's Galaxy S6. The overall metal and glass build is retained but this time around, Samsung is re-introducing the microSD card slot and IP67 certification like on the Galaxy S5 (according to the source).

      Expect to see the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge debut officially during MWC 2016 in Barcelona and the device will be rolling out globally in early March.

      LG's new K-series smartphones will have flagship features at mid-range prices


      CES has always been a big trade show for everything electronic but it has never been a place for smartphones and tablet, not high end devices to say. To stay true to this mantra, LG is launching a new LG K series smartphone lineup which has a mid-range price paired flagship features.

      Software features like Gesture Shot, Gesture Interval Shot and Tap and Shoot which were previously only available on LG's flagship devices will be available on the new LG K10 and LG K7. In terms of design, both the LG K10 and LG K7 will be the first to incorporate LG's new glossy pebble design language (sounds like something straight out of Samsung) and a 2.5D arc cover glass to create that unibody look and feel.

      In terms of the actual hardware, both devices are powered by a quad core processor, LTE and 3G versions, 8 and 13MP cameras and the signature rear button placement of LG devices. Both the LG K7 and LG K10 will be available later this year and CES 2016 visitors can check out the device in person at LG's booth in Hall #8204 of the Las Vegas Convention Center from January 6-9.

      Huawei Nexus 6P arrives in Malaysia for RM 2,698


      The trend on releasing two flagship smartphones have been set by Apple last year and this year Google is bucking up on that trend with the release of the LG made Nexus 5X and the Huawei made Nexus 6P. While the Nexus 5X is still not in the market, Chinese smartphone maker Huawei is officially launching the Nexus 6P in Malaysia.

      A full metal anodized aluminum unibody, 3D curved glass, chamfered edges, a USB Type C charging port and Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The new Nexus 6P is not just a way to experience all the new additions to Android 6.0 Marshmallow but it retains all the premium grade hardware unlike previous Nexus devices.

      Beyond all the fancy hardware that Huawei has built, the Nexus 6P comes with a new sensor on the back called Nexus Imprint. It is basically a fingerprint scanner that is fine tuned with Android and things like authorizing and unlocking the device is now officially supported on Android so you can rest assured that you data is safe. This does include support for the Android Pay system but there is no support for a mobile payment system in Malaysia yet.

      As for the price of this premium Android experience, Huawei Malaysia is pricing the Nexus 6P it at RM 2,698 which is a pretty odd number actually but this puts the new Nexus 6P in between all the flagship android smartphones in terms of pricing. But do note that this price is for the 64GB model and that the Nexus 6P will support LTE in malaysia.

      The Nexus 6P will be available for purchase online starting December 10 through both Lazada and Vmall for RM 2,698 and the first 600 customers will receive a free Chromecast.

      LG V10 has two display and two front facing cameras


      LG might have just unveiled a brand new Nexus phone for Google but they aren't stopping there as their new V10 android smartphone is now official. Basically, the LG V10 is roughly a LG G4 with identical specifications but the main difference is that the V10 comes with a secondary display that is always on. 

      Besides the 5.7" QHD IPS Quantum Display, the LG V10 also comes with a horizontal strip display (2.1" IPS Quantum Display with 160 x 1040 resolution) which LG says is independent to the main display and will not affect the battery life of the V10. This second screen is right above the main display and just below the earpiece. The possibilities are endless with this secondary display as tasks like display notifications can be done through that always on display. 

      In terms of hardware, the LG V10 comes powered with the Snapdragon 808 chipset paired with 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM, a 3,000mAh removable battery and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. There is also a microSD card slot on the LG V10 and the device itself also supports Qualcomm's Quick Charge 2.0. 


      But the LG V10 is not only about the second display, it is also about the camera experience. On the back, there is the same 16MP f1.8 camera module with OIS 2.0 and the front has two(2), you read that right, dual 5MP camera which enables users to take wide angle shots. With the dual lens mechanism, LG says that the front camera is capable of taking up to 120 degree shots. 

      The software itself is similar to that of the LG G4 and expect to see the same software features included in the LG V10. LG will be launching the LG V10 in Korea later this month followed by the US and China as well as Asis, Latin America and the Middle East. No official pricing has been revealed yet.

      First live images of LG's 2015 Nexus phone emerges


      While Huawei is widely expected to be making this year's Nexus device, reports in the past few weeks have hinted that LG will also be making a Nexus device this year making it a duo of Nexus phones for the very first time. Huawei's Nexus phone is expected to be as big as their P8 Max with a 5.7-6" display like the outgoing Nexus phone and that leaves LG to produce a compact Nexus phone (5-5.2" display) made for the everyday user.

      Last week we saw 3D renders of both the Huawei and LG Nexus phone and this week we have the first live image of the upcoming Nexus phone. As much as initial reports suggest, LG's 2015 Nexus is not merely just an upgrade to the age old Nexus 5, it'll come with an improved design alongside the up-to-date hardware configuration.

      From this image we can clearly see that there's a lot going on the back of the device with the slightly protruding camera module being accompanied by a dual LED flash array and the phase detection auto focus system. Moving down, we can see a round orb which is most likely the embedded fingerprint scanner and moving toward the center is the nexus logo in black and white.

      Google is expected to unveil both the Huawei and LG Nexus phones alongside the launch of Android M in September/October so stay tuned for more on that.
