Xiaomi announces a RM 600 MIJIA pressure rice cooker


Yesterday, Xiaomi announced the pricing and availability of the Redmi Note 3 here in Malaysia but in Beijing, the company took the advantage to show off a couple of new things. One of them is a brand new lineup of smart home appliances deigned and built in China. The new lineup is designed to showcase Chinese ingenuity and Xioami is starting up this lineup with the MIJIA which is a pressure rice cooker that has smart features. 

Just like all the big IoT trends these days, the MIJIA has built in Wi-Fi and users can interact with the functionality of the rice cooker directly from their smartphone. By simply scanning the barcode of a sack of rice, the MIJIA will be able to intelligently cook the rice to perfection. 


Xiaomi claims that their smart pressure rice cooker does not cut corners when it comes to features that matter like the cast iron pot that is essential to achieving a consistent cooking temperature. In addition to that, Xiaomi adds that they also went the distance to invite a renowned engineer from Japan to create the MIJIA rice cooker.

At just RM 610 (CN¥ 999 / US$ 150), the new MIJIA pressure rice cooker from Xiaomi is up to 5 times cheaper than competing product from Japan and it looks like Xiaomi is pretty confident that their new product is just as good as the others both in terms of design and raw functionality.

Xiaomi unveils the Mi 5 and Mi 4S at MWC 2016


For the first time ever, Xiaomi is holding a global announcement of their brand new flagship smartphone during Mobile World Congress. Leading the announcement of the Xiaomi Mi 5 today is Hugo Barra and after several weeks of successive marketing on social media the new flagship phone from Xiaomi is now official.

Just like all the other flagship devices being announced at MWC 2016 (LG G5, Galaxy S7, Xperia X Performance), the Xiaomi Mi 5 is also powered by the Snapdragon 820 SoC but the biggest difference is that Xiaomi is touting that the Mi 5 is able to score up to 140,000 points on AnTuTu which is significantly higher than the sub 100,000 score of current Snapdragon 820 devices. If your metric about speed is based on benchmarks, the Xiaomi Mi 5 is your best bet at the fastest phone right now.

Beyond the powerful chipset, Xiaomi is also touting that they have the most compact smartphone in the market right now. Compared to the similarly size Galaxy S7 which also has a 5.1-inch display, the Xiaomi Mi 5 is nearly 20g lighter than the Galaxy S7 which also packs a 3,000mAh battery. In terms of design, you might think that the Xiaomi Mi 5 looks a little like the Galaxy S7 right? Well, this design is actually from the Xiaomi Mi Note from last year which included a tapered glass back and a metal frame. The Exclusive version in particular (that costs $400 and comes with 4GB RAM and 128GB of storage) will come with a ceramic back.


But what's new in this design is that Xiaomi is adding a fingerprint scanner on the Xiaomi Mi 5 alongside a physical home button on the front of the device. The camera on the back of the Xiaomi Mi5 is also interesting as it comes with a 16MP sensor that has 4-axis optical image stabilization system that is a first for a smartphone.

Xiaomi fans in China will be able to pre-order the Xiaomi Mi 5 today and the phone will officially ship in China on March 1st. No word on the launch dates for other regions but Xiaomi confirms that India will get the Xiaomi Mi 5 after China and the Asian market including Malaysia will be the next in line to get the Xiaomi Mi 5. The device will come in three colors; black, gold and white.

But Xiaomi did not stop there, in addition to the announcement of the new Xiaomi Mi 5 flagship, the company is also revealing the Xiaomi Mi 5S which is an update to the Xiaomi Mi 4i from last year. The biggest change here is that there is no a fingerprint scanner on the back of the device and the Xiaomi Mi 4S now comes in a pink color. While there is no tapered back design like the new Mi 5, the Mi 4S does come with a flat glass and metal frame design. The new Xiaomi Mi 4S will go for ¥ 1,699 (~US$ 260 / RM 1,100) for the 3GB and 64GB memory option

Xiaomi's new Redmi 3 has a metal unibody design and a 4,100mAh battery

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has always been known for their ridiculously affordable android smartphones and with their new Redmi 3, they are bringing the game to the next level. The highlight of the new Redmi 3 is probably the massive 4,100mAh battery which an unseen spec that is on a $100 smartphone. The 4,100mAh battery which Xiaomi says can extend the talk time to up to 80% might sound cool but the design of the Redmi 3 is what makes the Redmi 3 so special, the device is constructed out of a unibody aluminium case that has a subtle pattern that blends in with the three colors.

On paper, the Redmi 3 sounds like a massive leap from it's predecessor by including a metal unibody opposed to the plastic design that Xiaomi has been know to use on their Redmi devices. Coupled with the 4,100mAh battery, the Redmi 3 is just 8.5mm thin which is an impressive feat when you compare it to devices with a 4,000+mAh battery.

At RMB 699 (or ~RM 465.2), the Redmi 3 (like all Xiaomi devices) sounds like a pretty good deal overall with a octa core Snapdragon 616 processor paired with 2GB of RAM. The rear camera is a decent 13MP shooter that has a 0.1s focus speed and the battery isn't the only thing getting upgraded, Xiaomi claims that the charging is a little quicker now that the battery is bigger. And yeah, the Redmi 3 is a Dual SIM device and the second SIM slot also doubles as a microSD card slot

Xiaomi will begin selling the Redmi 3 in China this week and it'll probably arrive in Malaysia within the next two months.

Apple announced a limited edition red and gold Apple Watch just for Chinese New Year


Ah, the Apple Watch. There has been ongoing reports that Apple will be announcing a successor to the first generation WatchOS device during the 1H 2016. But before that happens, it looks like Apple is ready to give the first generation Apple Watch a final push by making a limited edition version for Chinese New Year and also bringing it to Malaysia.

According to some leaked information obtained by MacRumors, Apple will be launching a limited edition PRODUCT(RED) Apple Watch Sport to the Asian market to celebrate that Chinese New Year celebrations. The source also mentioned that the limited edition Apple Watch will be available in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Taiwan and Singapore starting January 15 through February 22. This move by Apple is likely to expand the Apple Watch market during this festive season and is mainly fordone because China is a very important market to Apple right now.

The prices for the limited edition Apple Watch in red/gold will start at RM 1,559 for the 38mm and RM 1,849 for the 42mm version. Prices will go up to RM 2,749 if you opt to go with the 42mm Apple Watch with Steel case These price quotes are from the Singapore Apple Store and prices in Malaysia might vary. So, get yourself ready to get one of these red Apple Watch Sport in time for all those Chinese New Year #OOTD and we're not sure how 'limited' is this limited edition Apple Watch going to be.

Huawei Mate 8 announced, new homegrown Kirin 950 SoC but same 1080P display


Huawei which is the latest manufacturer to join Nexus program has unveiled a brand new smartphone earlier today. Similar to the new Nexus 6P, the new Huawei Mate 8 is also a 6" phablet constructed from aluminum but this time around, Huawei has reduced the bezels on the front to make the Mate 8 easier to hold. However, with the new Huawei Mate 8, the company is focusing on it's performance as this is the first device to be powered by Huawei's own Kirin 950 SoC which is fabricated by HiSilicon.

The inclusion of the new octa core Kirin 950 SoC is probably the biggest change from it's predecessor, the Huawei Ascend Mate 7. Other hardware features like the 6" 1080P display and the storage configurations remain the same. Huawei didn't include a fancy new USB Type-C port on the new Mate 8 but it did cleaned up the design and improved the camera optics. The rear camera is now up from 13MP to a 16MP Sony sensor that features OIS and the front camera has also been bumped up to 8MP. Finally, the rear mounted fingerprint scanner is still there but it is now a round ring like the Nexus 6P.

Huawei says that the new Mate 8 will go on sale in China early next year and will be previewed during CES 2016. As for pricing, the new Huawei Mate 8 starts at ¥2,999 (~MYR 1,988) for the 32GB model with 3GB of RAM and ¥3,699 (~MYR 2,452) and ¥4,399 (MYR 2,916) respectively for the 64GB and 128GB models with 4GB of RAM. Expect to see the Huawei Mate 8 arrive in Malaysia early next year but don't expect it to be that lucrative by then as Samsung, HTC, and even Huawei might even unveil an even better device.

Xiaomi unveils the Mi Pad 2 with a metal unibody design and a USB Type-C port


Continuing the metal theme for today's announcement, Xiaomi is also refreshing their Mi Pad with a premium aluminum build. Compared to the original Mi Pad, this new Mi Pad 2 is just 6.95mm thin and weighs only 322g despite the more premium unibody design.

Internally, the Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 is powered by Intel's Atom X5-Z8500 processor which is a 64-bit part fabricated in the 14nm process. Also included is Intel's HD graphics, a 7.9" 2048 x 1536 display, 2GB of RAM, 16/64GB of non-expandable memory, an 8MP rear camera, a 5MP front camera and a 6,190mAh battery.



Beyond the new internal and external hardware, Xiaomi is also introducing their new Mi Pad 2 tablet with a USB Type C port for extra future-proofing. Other additions include some software enhancements which disables the capacitive keys when viewing content in landscape more and there's also a new Reading mode in MIUI which reduces blue light and thus preventing eye fatigue.

Just like before, the Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 will start at RMB 999 (~MYR 662) for the 16GB model and RMB 1,299 ( ~MYR 860) for the 64GB model. Additionally, there will also be a version of the Mi Pad 2 that will be running Windows 10, not word as to when that will become available and how this Windows 10 version will play out. Xiaomi announces the Redmi Note 3 with a 4,000mAh battery and fingerprint scanner


Xiaomi's special November 24 event has just concluded and the company unveiled the successor to their popular phablet lineup, the Redmi Note. Not to be confused with the previous rumors which claimed the Redmi Note 2 Pro was coming, this new device ended up being just the Redmi Note 3 and this device continues Xiaomi's mission to bring quality hardware to a lower price point. On a side note, Xiaomi also revealed that they have sold over 6 million Redmi Note 2's in the last three months.

At just RMB 899 (~MYR 597), the Redmi Note 3 now comes with a metal build (0.45mm thicker) which is somewhat of an exit of the colorful plastic design with the recently announced Redmi Note 2. That's not all, the new Redmi Note 3 is also the first Xiaomi smartphone to feature a fingerprint scanner which is located just below the rear camera. According to Xiaomi, the fingerprint scanner can unlock the Redmi Note 3 in under 0.3s.


In terms of hardware, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 has nearly the same specifications compared to the Redmi Note 2. That includes an octa core 64-bit MediaTek processor (Helio X10 MT6795) paired with 2/3GB of RAM, 16/32GB of non-expandable memory, the same 5.5" 1080P display, a 13MP rear camera, a 5MP front camera and a larger 4,000mAh battery.

Currently, Xiaomi is only making the new Redmi Note 3 available in China for RMB 899 (~MYR 597) and RMB 1,099 (~MYR 730) for the 32GB model but given that the Redmi Note 2 was just recently launched in Malaysia, expect to see the Redmi Note 3 arrive in Malaysia within the next few months.

Apple's 12.9" iPad Pro is now available in 40 countries including Malaysia for RM 3,599


November 11th, dubbed Singles day in China, this day will be the biggest win for online shopping to date and what better way to celebrate by making the iPad Pro available. Yes, today Apple is finally making their largest iPad ever available to the masses after a two month wait. Xiaomi's new 20,000mAh Mi Power bank charges twice as fast than before

Annnnd we are back from a pretty long 2 month break and expect to see more news content from us in the coming days and week ahead. Also, Happy Diwali for those celebrating the festival of lights tomorrow. Right, back to the topic in hand. Xiaomi just launched the Redmi Note 2 in Malaysia last week but that doesn't stop them from show off more new gadgets.

While the new 20,000mAh Mi Power Bank is not specifically targeted for the Malaysian market for the time being, Xiaomi is claiming quite a lot with their largest power bank. With all that battery cells, Xiaomi claims that the new 20,000mAh Mi Power Bank is capable of charging the iPhone 6 upto 7 times, the Xiaomi Mi 4 for around 4.5 times and you can also expect to charge the 12" MacBook at least once provided you have a USB Type C connector in hand.

But the impressive 93% conversion rate and leading class circuit protection from Texas Instruments is nothing without the fast charging feature. Since, there is a 20,000mAh worth of cells in this power bank, Xiaomi has included a fast charging capability which will fully charge the power bank in about 5-6 hours which is twice as fast compared to previous Mi Power banks.

In terms of dimensions, the new 20,000mAh Mi Power Bank is actually lighter compared to the equivalent of two 10,000mAh Mi Power Bank at only 338g compared to 414g. Besides the quick recharge feature, there is also two USB ports which is capable of 5.1V/3.6A outputs to charge your smartphones / tablets / MacBooks. While this is not Qualcomm's Quick Charge 2.0/3.0 but it discharges quicker than the conventional power bank.

One key difference between the new 20,000mAh Mi Power Bank compared to previous 16,000/10,000/5,000mAh Power Banks is that Xiaomi is introducing a new outer shell which is said to be more durable and easier to hold in the hand compared to the older aluminum design which is quite slippery. Xiaomi will start selling this new 20,000mAh Mi Power Bank in China on Wednesday for about 149 Yuan or about (MYR 104).

Expect to see this 20,000mAh Mi Power Bank arrive in Malaysia within the next month or so.
