Celcom introduces the NewPhone program that let's you upgrade every 12 months


The cost of owning a smartphone has increased quite significantly in the last few years if you're looking for a top of the line device. Moat notably, US carriers like T-Mobile and AT&T are offering phone upgrade plans which does not tie down the user to a 2 year contract. The upgrade program has proven to be pretty popular as Apple also announced such a program alongside the iPhone 6S but that is currently exclusive to US at the moment.

But what if you want to get such a program in Malaysia? Well, you could sign up for Maxis's Zerolution plan which has been out for some time now and encompasses quite a wide range of device or you can subscribe to Celcom's NewPhone program that has the same benefits of Maxis's own Zerolution plan. But the biggest difference here is that Celcom's new NewPhone program currently only a couple of Samsung devices (all of them which are Samsung branded).


You might not be able to get the iPhone 6S through Celcom's NewPhone plan at the moment but options like the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ and Samsung Galaxy Note5 are also good. The main difference between what Maxis is offering opposed to Celcom's NewPhone plan is that with Celcom, you can enjoy the benefits of the NewPhone program with any postpaid plan from Celcom. Whether you are an existing or new customer doesn't matter and from as low as RM 100 (RM 45 + RM 55), you can enjoy the Galaxy J7 with Celcom's RM 45 plan that includes 2GB of data.

But realistically, you want a high end phone right. Monthly payments for the Celcom NewPhone plan goes up to RM 175 for the Galaxy S6 edge+ and you could save RM 29 a month by opting out of the device protection but I would rather not do that as you do need to return the phone in a good working condition if you want to be eligible for the upgrade.

As for the upgrade portion of Celcom's NewPhone program, you will be automatically eligable to upgrade to a new phone after 12 months but in addition to that, you can also opt in to upgrade a little earlier but that'll cost you as low as RM 300 and goes up to RM 1,000 if you're trying to do an early upgrade with the Galaxy S6 edge+ to get the new Galaxy S7 edge on Celcom's NewPhone program.

Hotlink FAST, a new prepaid plan that comes with 4G LTE data


The prepaid category in Malaysia has evolved drastically in 2015. From the fiasco which increased the price of reload coupons by 6% to both UMobile and Celcom unveiling new prepaid plans designed to bring more internet value to everyone. Well, today Hotlink (Maxis) is taking wraps off their brand new prepaid plan which is designed to take advantage of Maxis's quot on quote No.1 4G LTE Network.


Not to be outdone by UMobile's Power Prepaid Pack which comes with and extra 1GB of internet for life, Hotlink's new Hotlink FAST prepaid plan comes with a balance of both the conventional 3G speeds and also a piece of 4G LTE internet with the new Hotlink FAST plan. This means that you will have two different kinds of quota and how all this works is that the 4G data will be activated when you are inside Maxis's 4G LTE coverage (60% across Malaysia) and 3G data will resume when there's no 4G LTE coverage.

This quota is a little contradicting as the Hotlink website says that the 4G LTE quota can only be used on a 4G LTE network. So, does this mean that you lose half of the advertised quota is you do not use a 4G LTE enabled phone?

Nevertheless, if you do run out of internet quota within the validity period, you can top up 150MB, 500MB or 1GB of data for RM3, RM 8 and RM 12 respectively. Also, once the quota is reached, internet will stop it's service and unlike the plans with UMobile and Celcom, Hotlink's FAST prepaid plan does not come with unlimited 64kbps internet.

Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Note 5 to go on sale in Malaysia by September 5

Over the last few weeks, we have seen quite a lot of reports, leaks and rumors on Samsung's upcoming phablet and today we're just a week away from the official launch event which is happening in NYC on August 13. While the internet is pretty confident about the look and feel of the Galaxy Note 5 which looks a lot like a bigger Galaxy S6 with an S Pen, there's no actual release date yet.

There has been reports that Samsung plans to roll out the Galaxy Note 5 into major markets the week after it's formal launch and we're yet to confirm that fact. But here in Malaysia, Samsung devices usually come in pretty fast (unlike the iPhone) and this year is no difference as an internal source has just revealed that the Galaxy Note will be making it's way to Malaysia by the first week of September.

This report is pretty plausible as the device itself has already been certified through SIRIM as noted by Mdroid. While there's no concrete data on this report, the source mentioned that Digi, Celcom and Maxis are already gearing up to offer the Galaxy Note 5 by September 5. Whether this ends up being true or not, we'll just have to wait for the unpacked event next week.

As for the expected price of the Galaxy Note 5 in Malaysia, it should be around the RM 2,999 ball park.
